Eligibility Criteria

Admission to the two-year Diploma in Dental Hygiene Program requires the completion of a minimum of 5 full-year academic classes at the undergraduate level. These classes will normally be completed by May 1 of the year of expected entry to the School of Dental Hygiene. Two one-term academic classes in the same discipline are considered equal to one full-year academic class.

Academic requirements:
One full-year academic class in each of biology, sociology, psychology, a writing course and one elective
Completion of Nova Scotia grade 12 chemistry or its equivalent.
Applicants with the best academic record have the greatest chance of admission. Competitive applicants are invited to a one-day orientation session. Applicants will be provided with information on the career opportunities in Dental Hygiene, as well as information on the Dental Hygiene curriculum at Dalhousie University. Applicants will write a personal statement which will be scored by the Admissions Committee. Attendance at the orientation session is mandatory for those invited applicants.

The admissions committee can and does make significant use of non-academic factors in deciding which applicants are admitted.

Applicants are encouraged to submit all information that they believe should be taken into consideration by the Admissions Committee, such as special circumstances, minority group membership, etc. This information may be provided in the form of a confidential letter from the applicant.
