Eligibility Criteria
Regular admission requires an Alberta high school diploma or equivalent, a minimum age of 18 by end of intake trimester. Mature status admission is available to those at least 18 years of age and out of high school for one year. Consideration will be given to those in a non-traditional high school program. Candidates must submit one official high school and, if applicable, two post-secondary transcripts. An appraisal of reading and writing skills is necessary. Any required remedial courses resulting from the Skills Appraisal must be successfully completed before the program begins. Applicants who have completed their English 30 at 65 per cent or above are not required to complete the reading and writing Skills Appraisal.
The applicant is asked to provide an autobiography and two letters of reference. Completion of a standard first aid certificate is a condition of final acceptance. Security clearance is necessary for admission and must be maintained throughout the entire program in order to participate in field trips and field placements.
Applicants are assessed according to the following professional criteria:
able to express a career goal, related to the corrections/young offender field
able to demonstrate the motivation to complete the two-year diploma program
able to demonstrate a stable lifestyle (if applicant has a criminal record, he/she must be eligible for a pardon under the Criminal Records Act)
able to demonstrate that they have been actively involved in the community/school as a volunteer (corrections volunteer experience an asset)
able to demonstrate an awareness of the dual functions within the corrections field
able to demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills
Due to the large number of applicants, acceptance to the program is a competitive process, and the most qualified applicants are accepted.
