Durham College (DC) continues to bridge classroom theory with workplace execution through two flagship annual technology events: the DC IT Student Expo and the DC Hack-a-Thon. Designed around current industry demands, both events connect information technology students directly with employers, community partners, and real-world technical challenges to build career-ready competencies.

Together, the two initiatives highlight the breadth of technical expertise developed across Durham College’s IT programs, spanning software programming, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analytics, automation, and systems administration.

DC IT Student Expo: Bringing Classroom Projects to an Industry Audience

At the DC IT Student Expo, students present their capstone and technical projects in a professional exhibition setting that challenges them to articulate complex architectures, field questions from visiting professionals, collaborate with teammates, and communicate clearly with audiences outside the classroom:

  • Core Technology Domains Showcased: Student exhibits feature cloud and network infrastructure solutions, artificial intelligence applications, cybersecurity defense models, custom software development, workflow automation, and system monitoring tools.
  • Industry Keynote and Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: During the Spring 2026 Expo, design thinker, entrepreneur, and innovation leader Colin Dhillon delivered the keynote address, while students from Durham College’s Event Planning program gained hands-on experience supporting the planning and logistics of the exhibition.
  • Competitive Academic Recognition: Outstanding student projects are recognized through program-specific Best-in-Class awards as well as the overall Best-in-Show honour.

DC Hack-a-Thon: Building Real-World Tech Solutions in 24 Hours

Complementing the Expo, the DC Hack-a-Thon places students in an intensive 24-hour build sprint where teams collaborate to design, code, and pitch solutions to authentic operational challenges posed by industry and community partners.

Working under strict time constraints, participants integrate programming, artificial intelligence, data engineering, and cybersecurity skills to produce functional prototypes. Mentorship from industry partners provides practical perspective on how technology solves real organizational bottlenecks while reinforcing teamwork, critical problem-solving, and technical presentation skills.
