Durham College and Scotland’s Ayrshire College have expanded their international workforce partnership by introducing an interactive 3D mixed-reality Boeing turbine engine model into technical instruction. Managed by Durham College’s Corporate Training Services (CTS) and developed by its campus Mixed Reality Capture Studio (MRC), the project brings spatial computing directly into engineering and maintenance training.

Virtual Turbine Maintenance Through Mixed-Reality Engineering

At the center of the collaboration is a high-resolution 3D mixed-reality simulation of a Boeing turbine engine. The interactive model enables students to examine internal engine components in detail and perform virtual assembly and disassembly sequences to understand manufacturing, diagnostic, and maintenance procedures. By working with a digital twin, learners can practice on complex aerospace systems repeatedly without being restricted by the availability of physical turbine hardware.

In technical programs covering mechanical engineering, aviation maintenance, systems servicing, and operational safety, mixed-reality simulation helps students build spatial reasoning and analytical troubleshooting skills. Those practical competencies align directly with technical career roles such as aircraft maintenance technician, aviation engineering specialist, and industrial systems technologist.

Robin Young, Executive Director of Business and Workforce Development at Durham College Corporate Training Services, noted that the collaboration with Ayrshire College demonstrates how cross-border partnerships can modernize workforce training, helping students master complex technical systems to meet growing industry demand.

Cross-Border Collaboration Under the Scottish Education Exchange Programme

The 3D turbine model was developed after Ayrshire College secured innovation funding in 2025 to enhance its technical curriculum through advanced learning technologies, building on a formal partnership established through the Scottish Education Exchange Programme (SEEP). Following joint development between the Ontario and Scottish teams, a delegation from Durham College traveled to Scotland to meet with Ayrshire College partners, attend the official launch event with project sponsors, and outline priorities for the next phase of labour-market training initiatives.

Alistair Rodgers, Director of Enterprise Development at Ayrshire College, emphasized that international college partnerships play a vital role in preparing students for future workplaces by bringing applied innovation into classroom instruction and supporting broader economic growth.
